Environmental problems and Geographic education. A case study: Learning about the climate and landscape in Ontinyent (Spain)

2021

AbstractCultural perceptions of the environment bring us back to elements and factors guided by “natural” cause-effect principles. It seems that academic education has had little effect on the manner and results of learning about changes in the local landscape, especially as regards rational explanations. There is considerable difficulty relating academic concepts about the climate to transformations in the environmental landscape. Teaching tasks are mediatized due to the use of rigorous and precise concepts which facilitate functional and satisfactory learning. This is the objective of the research this article aims to undertake, for which we have chosen the case of Ontinyent (Spain). This…

Developmental Psychologists’ Perspective on Pathways Through School and Beyond

2014

This chapter applies sequence analysis—a method rarely applied by psychologists—to examine the transitional pathways of young people through the Finnish education system from a developmental psychologists’ perspective. Our aims were threefold: First, to identify typical pathways; second, to investigate whether psychological resources, operationalized as career goal appraisal, predict a certain educational trajectory; and, third, to examine the extent to which career goal appraisal shows differential change among young people on different educational pathways. Data analyses were based on the FinEdu study, in which N = 611 Finnish students were followed from age 16 (end of comprehensive schoo…

2010

Combining Academic Education With Soft Skills Development: Some Common Aspects of Educational Preparation of IT Professionals and Schoolteachers

2021

In the modern educational process aimed on preparing professionals in the applied areas, it’s crucial, along with purely professional training, to provide students both with solid theoretical background and help them to develop “soft skills” that will facilitate their smooth and efficient adaptation to the industry realities when they start their professional careers. In this paper we consider practical cases of acquiring soft skills through intensive field experience in two areas related to mathematical education.

Competency Orientation in Higher Education

2016

In recent years, higher education, particularly in Germany, has been marked by fundamental structural and programmatic changes after the implementation of the Bologna reform and the orientation towards competencies in the national standards for education, for instance, set forth by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs in Germany. The quality of academic education and its social returns have received increasing attention, and endeavors to develop and implement fair assessments of students’ learning outcomes have revealed diverse challenges. In Germany and internationally, it is becoming increasingly important to define and assess in an objective, reliabl…

Training Programs – Training and Development Alternatives for Students

2013

Abstract Training programs have been established as a form of training for adults, being generally used within companies’ personal development alternatives starting from the employees’ performance assessment processes. The current century requires a different way of approaching academic education, starting from the employers’ observation in reference to the lack of the graduates’ key competencies in the hiring process. We intend to demonstrate that it is useful to introduce training programs as an alternative form of education in academia, as well as in the high school environment.

The role of parental affection and psychological control in adolescent athletes' symptoms of school and sport burnout during the transition to upper …

2018

Abstract Introduction The transition from compulsory school to upper secondary school is a challenging period for adolescents. Especially challenging it can be for adolescents who aim to integrate two domains of achievement, such as an athletic career and academic education. The pressure from two intertwined achievement domains may make student-athletes vulnerable to symptoms of burnout. The study examined the role of mothers' and fathers’ affection and psychological control as possible risk or protective factors in the symptoms of school and sport burnout among 15–16 year olds adolescent athletes in Finland. Methods The adolescents’ (n = 391) burnout symptoms in the two domains were measur…
